Bawku Conflict: Chief Justice Orders Immediate Reopening Of 4 Courts In Upper East Region

Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has directed the immediate reopening of four courts in the Upper East region.

The courts to be reopened include the High Court, Bolgatanga; Circuit Court, Bolgatanga; District Court, Bolgatanga; and District Court, Bongo.

This decision follows the earlier closure of seven courts in the Bawku township and surrounding communities due to recent disturbances in Bawku township, causing multiple clashes and deaths.

The Chief Justice, therefore, ordered the closure to ”ensure the safety and security of Judges, Staff, Lawyers and Court Users.”

She added that the closure would remain “until further notice.”

However, in a statement issued by the Judicial Secretary on Friday, November 8, it noted that, based on the Chief Justice’s earlier decision, she has now “directed the reopening” of four courts for “business, with immediate effect.”

The statement further requested that the Registrars of the mentioned courts “take note and resume the operations of the Court accordingly.”
