VRA Staff Groups Partially Suspend Actions Amidst Merger Bill, Await Full Withdrawal From Parliament

The Leadership of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Staff Groups has announced a partial suspension of certain protest actions, in response to recent steps taken by the Minister of State at the Energy Ministry concerning a proposed merger of the VRA and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

This decision follows a letter from President Akufo-Addo, acknowledging the staff groups’ earlier petition and requesting input on the issue, along with a subsequent meeting between the VRA Board, Management, and the Staff Groups’ Leadership on October 3, 2024.

In a statement issued by the Staff Groups, during that meeting, VRA staff advised the authorities to facilitate the withdrawal of the merger bills from Parliament as a prerequisite for further discussions.

The statement noted that on October 17, the Minister, Herbert Krapa in a letter addressed to the Clerk of Parliament signaled a request for a pause on the bill's progression.

In light of this, the Staff Groups expressed their intent to “remain true to our promise, and in commitment to the essential services that we provide,” notifying the authorities of a partial suspension of certain actions until a complete withdrawal of the bills is achieved.

They further urged that these steps be expedited to ensure a stable working environment.

The Staff Groups reiterated their commitment and trust that the Minister would use his office to ensure “a peaceful industrial atmosphere at the VRA and NEDCo.”
