Members of Ghana's Parliament return to their makeshift floor at the Dome of the International Conference Centre for Tuesday, October 22, 2024’s sitting.
The main issue the House is expected to tackle is which political party forms the Majority Caucus and which forms the Minority Caucus, following the declaration of four seats in the House vacant by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
The Speaker made the declaration citing Article 97 [1(g) & (h)] of the 1992 Constitution, which states that “a member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member; or if he was elected a member of Parliament as an independent candidate and joins a political party.”
The Supreme Court of Ghana on October 18, 2024, stayed the ruling of Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, in the matter of the vacation of some four seats.
The court went on to direct that the MPs whose seats were declared vacant, Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), be reinstated.
The question many Ghanaians are asking is whether the Speaker is going to adhere to the directive of the Supreme Court.
