Several protesters taking part in the ongoing three-day protest by Democracy Hub have been picked up by the police for engaging in unlawful activities, including blocking roads, toppling police barriers, and obstructing traffic at the 37 Roundabout in Accra.
The infuriated protestors expressed their frustrations to the police officers about the negative impact of illegal mining activities in the country.
"We are not going to give up; we will still continue the fight. Look at what illegal mining activities have done to our water bodies", one protestor remarked as they were led to the police vehicle while chanting patriotic songs.
Tensions between the police and Democracy Hub escalated on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, when the police secured an injunction from the Accra High Court to prevent the group from holding their 3-day protest at Revolution Square, located in front of the Jubilee House.
The group, however, defied the police and embarked on the protest to demand a stop to illegal mining activities in the country popularly referred to as galamsey.
The arrests follow a warning the police issued to the protesters on September 21, 2024, to desist from such acts.
The police are yet to provide an official statement on the exact number of people detained or the specific charges.
