Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the reintroduction of road tolls to fund road infrastructural development.
This proposal comes after the country abolished road tolls in 2022 at the height of the push for electronic transaction levy (E-Levy) and to also alleviate traffic congestion on major roads.
Speaking during his Volta Regional tour, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the necessity of this move to generate the revenue needed for infrastructural projects.
“Let us go back to a system of broad-based road tolls. The tolling system has to come back, and I think it will come back.
“It is a fundamental mistake of the government to place all road projects on the budget. The government doesn’t have enough money and the private sector has to be brought in,” he said during an engagement in the opposition stronghold.
Addressing concerns from citizens about the deteriorating condition of roads at a meeting with the clergy in the Volta Region, the Vice President highlighted the government's financial constraints in undertaking infrastructure development.
He proposed that a broadened road toll system would provide a viable solution to these funding issues.
