Holding Events At State House Could Allow Thieves Break Into MPs’ Cars, Steal Valuable Items – Speaker

Speaker Alban Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin voiced concerns regarding the challenges encountered by the legislative body due to events regularly held in the forecourt of the State House.

The former Nadowli Kaleo Member of Parliament highlighted the security risks posed to lawmakers as they carry out their official duties during such occasions.

Speaker Bagbin addressed these issues during discussions with the top five schools that participated in the National Public Speaking Competition on Friday, March 1.

During the conversation, he expressed worry about the potential disruptions to Parliament's operations caused by the frequent hosting of events at the State House's forecourt.

He further emphasised that such situations could result in break-ins into vehicles belonging to Members of Parliament and the theft of other valuable items.

“I’m sure when you were coming you heard some noise outside, when we are busy doing our work, then there are people outside there permitted to come and make and noise.

"By the time we go outside, they could have broken into our cars, and stolen things. You talk to them it is like they are deaf and dumb, they don’t hear. We are constrained to be able to function properly."
